New Record at the British Gas Scottish National Championships

The Loughborough ITC swimmer shaved quarter of a second off his previous record which he set a year ago.
At the 400m mark the 24 year old had a three second lead which he had increased to six seconds by the 600m mark. He powered through the final 50m to finish in 7.50.49. Team mate Daniel Fogg took silver in 8.00.18 followed by Swansea Performance’s Gareth Keating in third with a time of 8.14.58.
Davies said: “I was looking to get a quicker time but I am feeling a bit tired through my training. I have been trying to bring it back stronger but the energy just wasn’t there tonight. To get a record always gives you a buzz but I wanted to go faster tonight.
“The 800m event isn’t a certainty for me in Rome. I am going to sit down tonight and consider options. The dilemma is it isn’t an Olympic event and I don’t want it to impact those that are.”
Davies’ Performance at the Scottish National Championships
Friday saw Davies secure his first gold of the championships in the 400m Freestyle.
After the first turn Davies lay in fifth place but he had pushed his way into second behind Robbie Renwick by the 300m mark. The City of Glasgow swimmer looked set to take the number one spot until Davies gave his all in the final 50m to finish a second ahead of the Scot in 3.48.69. Wear Valley’s Chris Alderton took the bronze in a time of 3:51.50.
Renwick’s time of 3.49.92 is half a second faster than Lewis Smith’s time from the British Long Course Championships in Sheffield therefore he could still make the World Championship Team.
The British Gas World Championship Team will be finalised after the results of the Scottish Nationals are in tonight. The team will consist of the winners from Sheffield and those with the second fastest times over the two events.
Despite winning a silver medal in the 10km Open Water event in Beijing last summer Davies is choosing to concentrate on the 1500m Freestyle in preparation for London 2012.
